A unique and groundbreaking institution in Kingston, Jamaica. The school was founded by parents in 1993. They believed that their children who developed differently had the right to education. The right to take part in social interaction with other children and to be given the opportunity and specialized help to reach his/her full potential. The STEP Centre: - emphasizes full parental participation and on going staff development
- provides a training resource for professionals and paraprofessionals in the field
- seeks to be an advocate for children with disabilities and their families
The STEP Centre is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team including teachers, physiotherapist, speech and occupational therapists and teaching assistants. |

Step Centre News
- Construction has begun on our new school funded by The Digicel Foundation. This new facility will include a sensory room, therapy areas, spaces for individual and small group teaching, specially adapted bathrooms and a resource room. It will allow us the opportunity to expand and improve both the programme for our in-school children and our outreach to those who are not in an appropriate educational setting. We want to develop a sensory garden and aplayground which gives our children new experiences. This is truly an exciting time for our school.
- Our very special children remain the focus of our attention. Two of our older children left us toattend a secondary programme and we were able to admit new students. This year we hope to strengthen our parent support initiatives through partnering with the Jamaica Association for persons with Disabilities.
- The children who attend our school continue to be enriched by volunteers. Two retired teachers work with individual children on a regular basis. Others visit regularly and provide enthusiastic support and encouragement.
